Breaking Dawn Ebook

Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer

The Twilight Saga has been an amazing success story for vampire novelist extraordinaire Stephenie Meyer. Stephenie Meyer Breaking Dawn has just hit the movie theaters  (part 2 is due for release on November 16, 2002) to much fanfare and lots of ringing of cash registers.

Vampires are cool it appears? Breaking Dawn is book 4 in the Saga – and the Twilight novels collectively have sold over 100 million copies worldwide, with translations into 38 different languages, they are very popular in France for some reason, or so I’m told by my family .

Stephenie Meyer was the most successful writer in 2008 and 2009 in the USA, – 29 million books sold in 2008 and 26.5 million sold in 2009. So that means she’s doing OK for herself. If you have a novel in you then don’t hold back, who knows you may be the next outstanding success. You don’t even need an agent or a publisher as you can easily self-publish your novel for the Kindle or Nook and upload it to Amazon – Katie Klein, Amanda Hocking and many others have done just that and now they are sitting pretty, having abandoned the day jobs !

Breaking Dawn is the 4th and final novel in The Twilight Saga, split into into 3 parts, parts 1 and 3 being written from Bella’s point of view and part 2 written from Jacob’s perspective, which is all very odd but that’s vampies for you I guess.

It follows on from the events in the previous novel, Eclipse, as Bella and Edward get married, dumping a heartbroken Jacob. Bella undergoes the ultimate transformation and saves her love (maybe).   The whole Twilight series is the result of a dream that Stephenie Meyer had, which is also kinda odd. So don’t rhow out your dreams with the garbage write them down in 400 page novels !

Breaking Dawn the book was released on August 2, 2008 at midnight parties in over 4,000 bookstores throughout the US.  Its initial print run was 3.7 million copies, over 1.3 million were sold in the US in the first 24 hours of the book’s release – a record in first-day sales performance for the Hachette Book Group USA. The book was the third best-selling novel of 2008 behind Twilight and New Moon.

Paolini and King Do IT Again

New Ebooks on the Block

Two big hitters have been writing books and publishing them as ebooks, which is good news for ebooks fans and people consieringg whther they should be writing ebooks themselves. There is after all money to be made from them, and I should really get my act together and stop writingthese dribblings on blogs that no-one reads adn start writing best-selling ebooks instead !

Any enoughof me – the two big hitters that have just published new books are Stephen King and Christopher Paolini. Stephen King is by far the more impressive of the abovementioned writers, but neverthless Mr paolini does alright for himself fromthe royalties from his Eragon books.

Stephen King has written a time travelling book about a guy who travels back to 1958 and tries to stop JFK being assassinated – a nutty idea of course – but you can read about it inmore detail here – Stephen King Ebook

Christopher Paolini onthe other hand has written the final story int he Inheritance series about dragons and whatnot – he has sold millions of them and there has even been a film (not very good) so what will he do now he has finished the series ? Time alone will tell. Perhaps some time travelling and maybe he could go back and stop Stephen King writing his time travelling book ?  More details about C Paolini and his dragonettes can be seen here – Paolini Inheritance Book 4

Nook Tablet or Kindle Fire?

Nook Tablet or Kindle Fire ?

Better specs. or lower price?

The specs for the Nook are slightly better than for the Fire but the extra $50 will probably clinch it for the Kindle Fire.

If you are wondering whether to buy the Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet the extra $50 may just be the clincher – the Fire is $199 compared with $249 for the Nook Tablet. We suspect there will be quite a few more Fire buyers than Nook buyers this Christmas. The Tablet has slightly better specs but not enough for the extra price.

The Kindle is also better known and Amazon has more content and aps available than Barnes and Noble, although this may change.

The screens are both 7″.

The speed is 1 GHz on both devices.

The Nook Tablet has more storage at 16GB, expandable via a slot for a 32GB memory card. The Kindle only has 8GB but you can store books online with Amazon.

They are not really competitors for the iPad but they are $250 cheaper and most iPad users don’t really need an iPad a Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet does everything they want to do just as well.

One plus point for the Nook is that you can try before you buy in a Barnes & Noble store.

It also has a microphone in it.

Barnes and Noble may bring down the price of the Nook to $199 after the initial fever (maybe after Xmas?).

So to sum up the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet are very similar. The Nook has ceratin advantages e.g. storage, microphone, and battery life (maybe). For the software the Kindle is the better device. Barnes and Noble may increase the number of apps on offer but at the moment Amazon has a clear advantage in this area.

For many people the Kindle Fire is the better choice at $199 as the extra specifications of the Nook do not really justify the $249 price.

Barry Eisler’s Ebook Decision

Barry Eisler Goes Down the Ebook Route

Barry Eisler is an established author of thrillers, having had a number of best-sellers since his first novel Rain Fall was published in 2003.

He has recently become famous for having turned down a $500K book deal with St Martins Press to publish his latest novel The Detachment himself via Amazon and the Kindle in ebook form.

He argues that the 70% he can get from Amazon is a lot better than $500K plus 14.9% from a publisher, in the long run. His ebook The Detachment is already available on Amazon where it is getting good reviews. The argument is easy to understand, ebooks will be around ‘forever’ and over that time he will continue to get 70% on each one sold. Barry Eisler ebooks will be making money for a long time to come ! And in fact it’s about time I jumped on the bandwagon.

Legacy publishing is in trouble and publishers are having to revise their business models. They now need writers more than writers need them !

Another author having success with the ebook format is Katie Klein – not quite on the same scale as Barry Eisler or other established authors but nevertheless she is doing well and is destined to do better, having just been highlighted by Amazon in their Kindle newsletter. John Locke Runaway Ebook Success

John Locke Makes a Killing from His Crime Ebooks

John Locke was the 1st self-published author to sell 1 million ebooks for the Kindle on Amazon. Before him there were 7 writers who had already sold 1 million ebooks, but they were all published by major publishing houses.

On his website he describes how he sold 1,100,000 eBooks in 5 months. He has also had four of the top ten eBooks on Amazon at the same time, including No. 1 and No. 2.  Every eBook John Locke has written and self-published has been a best-seller.

John Locke ebooks are in the crime fiction genre in the guise of the Donovan Creed series – Lethal People – Lethal Experiment – Saving Rachel – Now & Then – Wish List – A Girl Like You – Vegas Moon

He was already a successful businessman when he heard that he could publish novels as ebooks and get 35% commission on a 99 cent ebook, which seemed to him an offer he couldn’t refuse. One of the reasons he is so successful is because he prices all his ebooks at 99 cents, and the large quantities he sells means that this tactic is paying off.

His ebooks may be cheap but they are not rubbish, as is proved by the fact that he has just signed a ground-breaking contract with Simon and Schuster under which he retains all of his eRights, something that is unheard of in the publishing world.

So what is the secret of John Locke’s success? After all there are lots of self-published authors that haven’t sold a million ebooks. First he writes books people like to read. Second, he markets them via the Internet on Twitter and Facebook and the like, creating a lot of buzz and friends and snowballs etc…, third he prices them low at 99 cents. It’s worth pointing out that Amanda Hocking said she did very little marketing and she is also highly successful.

Ebooks are changing the face of publishing – if you want to be a best-selling author then now is the time to do it ! If you are a reader then there’s never been a more exciting time in publishing, as you can get to read novels that up untilnow were being ‘censored’ by economics.  It’s worth bearing in mind too that some of the world’s greatest authors started off by pubilshing their own books.

Ebooks are Big Business

Ebooks are Big Business

Since Amazon launched the Kindle a couple of years ago there has been a steady rise in the sale of ebooks, so much so that now Amazon says it sells more ebooks than print books. The Kindle is a device that lets you store thousands of books, magazines and newspapers so that you can read them whenever you want. This is particularly useful not only for people who like reading novels, but also for people who need access to a large number of books, such as students. With a Kindle you can carry hundreds of books without increasing the weight !

Amazon doesn’t say how many Kindles it has sold but it is thought to be in the millions. The result of all this is that the face of publishing is changing. One of the largest chains of bookstores in the world, Borders, has just closed its doors, it didn’t adapt to the changing face of publishing in time.

For writers however the Kindle and other ebook readers are a godsend. You can now write your novel publish it on the ebook and it instantly becomes available to millions of potential customers via Amazon. There are writers who have struggled to get their books into print who are now writing best-selling ebooks that sell in their tens of thousands every month on Amzon, and they make a fair amount of money doing it. Writers such as Amanda Hocking, J A Konrath, D D Scott and others.

Amanda Hocking Best-Selling Author of Fantasy Ebooks

There are ebooks on all types of subjects – fiction and non-fiction. There are new authors publishing their ebooks for the first time and established authors branching out into self-published ebooks. You no longer need an agent or a publisher to be able to make a decent living from your writing.

The balance of power has shifted from agents and publishers to writers, which is not a bad thing. We will be taking a close look at the rising phenomenon of ebooks and writers and may even write our very own ebook just to see what all the fuss is about.
